What to Expect at Your First Dance Lesson
Almost everyone who walks through our door for the first time is nervous. They have usually been thinking about it for months, sometimes years. So here is exactly what happens, start to finish.
You do not need a partner
This is the question we are asked most, and the answer is no. In a private lesson your instructor is your partner. Most of our students started on their own, and plenty of them still come alone years later. If you do have a partner, bring them. Neither way is better.
You do not need any experience
The intro offer exists precisely for people who have never danced a step. Two 30-minute private lessons, $40 per person. We are not assessing you. Nobody is watching. There is no point at which you will be asked to perform.
What to wear
Comfortable clothes you can move in, and shoes with a smooth sole. That is genuinely it. Leather-soled dress shoes work. Trainers with grippy rubber soles are the one thing to avoid, because they catch on the floor when you turn.
Do not buy dance shoes yet. Wait until you know you are staying.
The first fifteen minutes
We talk. Your instructor will ask what brought you in: a wedding, a cruise, a partner who loves dancing, a doctor who suggested it, or simple curiosity. The answer shapes everything that follows, because a couple with a first dance in eleven weeks needs something different from someone who wants a new Tuesday evening.
Then you will stand up and start moving, usually sooner than you expect.
What you will actually learn
Probably one dance, and a small piece of it. Not a routine. Most likely how to hold your frame, how to move with someone, and one basic step done slowly until it stops feeling strange.
The thing nobody tells beginners: partner dancing is mostly about communication, not memorisation. The steps are the easy part.
Will you be any good?
No, and that is fine. Nobody is good in the first half hour. What usually happens is that somewhere in the second lesson something clicks, you move across the floor with another person without thinking about your feet, and you understand why people do this.
Afterwards
There is no hard sell. We will talk about what you enjoyed and what makes sense next: more private lessons, a group class, or the wedding programme if you have a date. If dancing turns out not to be for you, that is a perfectly good outcome for $40.
